Mauritania’s pastoralists have for centuries moved their cattle and goats across the Sahel in search of pasture, but worsening drought is making that ever harder, threatening a way of life and producing growing conflict.

But an innovative effort to negotiate pastoralist corridors that give herders a safe way to travel across national boundaries with their animals – and persuade those along the way that the herders bring more benefits than threats – could protect an age-old way of life.
